Are Mirages Real?

Oceans in the desert, cities in the sky, phantom armies...these are just a few of the mirages that people have witnessed throughout history. Mirages are optical illusions caused by two layers of air at different temperatures. They're not real, but they often look very convincing. How do they work? Light is refracted, or bent, where hot air warmed by the ground meets cooler air from above. This plays tricks on your eyes, causing you to sometimes see reflections of the sky that look like water. Have you ever seen a black asphalt road shimmer in the heat? That's a mirages!
